A series of
meetings were held in the summer of 1998 to create a new
not-for-profit corporation (called ICANN
- Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers )
to take over the functions of IANA, the Internet Assigned
Numbers Authority. These meetings were in response to the
U.
S. Department of Commerce Statement of Policy on the
Management of Internet Names and
Addresses and
were organized under the umbrella of the International
Forum on the White Paper (IFWP).
